In reply to <a href="https://www.ofarrellcm.com/fails-job-interview/#comment-434">Karen McLean</a>.

Go for it Karen. Step out of your comfort zone and go for jobs that aren't 'safe.' The way you land those jobs, by the way, is through personal contacts; through networking. Yes, apply online if that is where you found the job, but work your network after you apply.

Many jobs are never advertised anywhere. Job boards don't help you find those. People do.

I know I am preaching to the choir, by maybe others will read this and change their behavior.

Still think I would have pitched better than Tim Hudson last night (Braves won, 7-5) because I've read so many blogs about pitching. Don't think I would have given up that homer to Chase Utley.

You bring up an excellent point, Dave.

It is a skill to write a resume that doesn't "over sell" yourself and, at the same time, promote your strengths and background. I think we sometimes exaggerate our abilities hoping to get the interview hoping our dazzling personalities will land us the job. But, as you have pointed out, if you're a 57 mph pitcher and they are looking for a 90 mph pitcher, personality won't get you on the team (well, maybe as a water boy).

I've been told to apply for positions even if I don't have all the stated qualifications because employers are looking for their "ideal" candidate. Kind of like selling a house – your asking price is rarely the selling price.

So, my question is: should we only apply for the "safe" jobs, or shall we reach beyond that?

Go Braves!
